Biographical Sketch 
Carlos A. Estrada, MD, MS, is Professor of Medicine and Director of the Division of General Internal Medicine at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, Senior Scholar and Director of the Veterans Administration National Quality Scholar Fellowship Program (VAQS), Chair of the Quality Management Council, and Scientist at the REAP Center for Surgical, Medical Acute Care Research & Transitions (C-SMART), Birmingham VAMC.

Dr Estrada received his medical degree from Cayetano Heredia University in Lima, Peru. He then completed his internship, residency in internal medicine and Chief Medical Residency at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Michigan. While completing his fellowship in general internal medicine, also at Henry Ford Hospital, Dr Estrada received a Master of Science degree in Clinical Research Design and Statistical Analysis at the University of Michigan School of Public Health in Ann Arbor.

Description
Dr Estrada’s research interests are in decision analysis, quality improvement, and implementation research. He has conducted studies on the evaluation of cultural competency education and online continuous medical education with a focus on cardiovascular diseases and diabetes in rural practices, implementation research with a focus on cardiovascular diseases and diabetes, the science of quality improvement (publication guideline), and faculty development on the scholarship of medical education. Dr. Estrada is leading efforts at the Birmingham VAMC to improve quality of care and safety in hospitalized patients.
