Biographical Sketch 
Dr. Ness received his medical and graduate school (Pharmacology) training at the University of Iowa and continued with residency (Anesthesiology) and fellowship (Pain Management) training at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.

Research/Clinical Interest
Title
Description
Research interests are of both basic science and clinical types. Basic science endeavors include studies of visceral pain neurophysiology using extracellular techniques to characterize lumbosacral dorsal horn neurons responsive to visceral stimuli such as gut or bladder distension. Reflex responses (cardiovascular and visceromotor) to visceral stimuli are used as global correlates of neurophysiological measures. Pharmacological and procedural manipulations are then applied to determine the role of neuronal subpopulations in visceral sensation. Clinical research interests include the management of visceral pain and pain due to spinal cord injury.
