Richard M. Allman, MD, Professor of Medicine, Director, Birmingham/Atlanta VA Geriatric Research, Education, and Clinical Center (GRECC) and Director of the UAB Center for Aging and the Division of Gerontology and Geriatric Medicine has had mentored at least seven patient-oriented clinical researchers who currently hold faculty appointments at UAB, the University of Louisville, or the University of Alabama. Three of these trainees (Ritchie, Klapow, and Sims) have received career development awards from the NIH or the VA. Another received career development funding from the American Federation for Aging Research and the Hartford Foundation. One received a minority supplement to Dr. Allman’s current NIA-funded UAB Study of Aging (Crowther). Three of these trainees have gone on to get indpendently funded projects from the NIH (Goode), the VA (Sims) and Alabama Medicaid (Baker). Dr. Allman is a board-certified internist and geriatrician and clinical epidemiologist with expertise in mobility and geriatric care quality improvement. He currently serves as PI for an R01 from NIA (“Mobility Among Older African Americans and Whites”) and is co-investigator on another R01 related to strength training in older adults. He serves as co-director for the Hartford Foundation-funded Southeast Center of Excellence in Geriatric Medicine, a joint research training program with Emory University that provides salary support, pilot grant funds, and a formal mentoring program for physicians committed to academic careers in Geriatric Medicine. Previous/current UAB trainees of the SCEGM include: Holly Richter, MD, PhD; Ali Ahmed, MD, MPH; Trygve Tollesfbol, DO, PhD; Victor Mark, MD; and Cynthia Baker, MD. He also serves as Associate Director for the NIA-funded T32 grant, Behavioral and Clinical Training in Gerontology. In its second year, this training grant has filled all four of its pre-doctoral and its four post-doctoral positions.
