Research/Clinical Interest
Title
Mammalian development and animal models
Description
My research interests are in the area of mammalian development and in the identification and characterization of animal models of human disease; however, as Director of the Animal Resources Program (ARP), my responsibilities are primarily in the area of service. The Program, which has been accredited by the Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care (AAALAC, International) since 1971, supports the animal care and use activities of approximately 300 investigators of the University of Alabama at Birmingham and the Birmingham Veterans Administration Medical Center. Specific responsibilities of the ARP include animal procurement; quarantine, health surveillance, and veterinary medical care; provision of facilities and personnel for surgery, radiography, postoperative care, necropsy, and diet preparation; assurance of compliance with laws and policies regarding animal research; and assistance of UAB and VA faculty and students in the conduct of research and teaching programs that use animals. Examples of some of the basic and clinical research programs supported by the ARP are the Alzheimer’s Disease Center, Cardiovascular Research and Training Center, Center for Interdisciplinary Research in Immunological Disease, and Comprehensive Cancer Center. Animal housing and support space (over 100,000 sq ft) includes conventional, barrier, and hazard containment facilities. The staff includes three ARP veterinarians, who have full time faculty appointments in the Department of Comparative Medicine, trainees in laboratory animal medicine, administrative and clerical assistants, animal health technicians, and animal care technicians and supervisors.
