Title
TGF-beta/Bmp signaling during cardiogenesis
Description
Reveal the functions of Tgf-beta/Bmp signaling pathway during cardiogenesis using mice as the model system. Congenital heart defects occur in as many as 1% of newborns, and are the leading cause of infant morbidity and mortality. The most common disorders are caused by malformations in septum formation and valvulogenesis (septal-valvulogenesis) during cardiogenesis. Tgf-beta/Bmp signaling pathways play critical roles during many biological processes including septal-valvulogenesis. Through tissue specific inactivation of genes encoding Bmp4 and the type II receptor of Tgf-beta, Dr. Jiao developed two unique mouse models mimicking two forms of human congenital heart disease during his postdoctoral training period. The current focus of the lab is to reveal the functions of Tgf-beta/Bmp signaling during cardiogenesis utilizing the powerful tools of mouse molecular genetics complemented with cellular and biochemical approaches.
